Litter Be Gone is a series of events to clean up litter across Minneapolis each fall; this year it is from October 1-10. You can participate on your own by picking up litter around your home or workplace anytime this week, or you can join us in a neighborhood-wide cleanup day on October 10th!
To join the cleanup, meet us at Sheridan School from 10-12pm on Saturday, October 10th. We will have gloves, bags, vests, and litter grabbers available and will be giving away drink coupons to all participants. See you then!
If you pick up individually, you can report your results using the online form (and earn a free Chinook Book subscription), and share photos on social media with @LitterBeGoneMN #cleanMpls.

Support Network Paused
SNO has decided to pause the Sheridan Support Network for a period of re-envisioning. We have received more funding requests than we can manage and are working on a system of vetting folks to ensure that they indeed do live in Sheridan or nearby neighborhoods. We wish we could support everyone, but all the funding we are reallocating is coming from community members, so we need to be sure that we are connecting them with folks in our community who need funds, as we promised.
- If you need masks, please email us at sno@sheridanneighborhood.org and we can drop them off to you.
- If you need supplies, you can find your nearest mutual aid location here: https://twin-cities-mutual-aid.org/.
- If you need support for rent or bills, please look into the Emergency Rental Assistance program: https://www.hennepin.us/rent-help
If you are hoping to help out, we encourage you to check in with your neighbors to see if they need anything (short term or long term), and to bring donations or sign up to offer meals to your closest homeless encampment. Find encampment meal sign up links here: https://linktr.ee/sanctuarymeals.
Anti-Racist Book Club
Our next Anti-Racist Book Club discussion is coming right up this Thursday, September 3rd at 7pm! We are reading stories from the anthology "A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota."
Go to the facebook event to RSVP and find the link to read the book free online, this month's readings, and all future updates!
You can watch a livestream of the book talk from our first meeting by author Mr. David Grant! Click here to watch.
In the wake of the #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd protests, SNO has started an Anti-Racist Book Club for Sheridan Neighborhood residents, which will meet the last Thursday of each month.
📖 The first book we are reading is a collection of short stories called "A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota." This book is available free online here: https://library.biblioboard.com/module/one-book-one-minnesota/masonry/1
💭 Please read the story for the month and any stories from previous months and come with reflections and discussion questions to be ready for small group discussion:
June 25th: "People Like Us" by David Lawrence Grant (p195)
July 30th: "Trouble in Mind: To Be Black is Blue in America" by IBè (p69)
*September 3rd: "Introduction" by Sun Yung Shin, "Fear of a Black Mother" by Shannon Gibney , and "Disparate Impacts: Moving to Minnesota to Live Just Enough for the City" by Taiyon J. Coleman (pages 3-42).
(*Rescheduled due to curfew)
📚 The first 50 people will receive a hard copy of the book, sponsored by a Sheridan neighbor Conor Hesch, www.closingwithconor.com, a local mortgage lender who helps you get approved to buy a Home or Duplex!
☀️ This is an outdoor, socially distanced event. Please bring camp chairs or whatever will make you comfortable outside. Masks are required.
🧠 Members of this monthly book club will read books across genres that explore issues of race in America as a means of better understanding ourselves, our history and our Minneapolis community. Education and greater self-awareness are foundational for change. Everyone is welcome. We only ask that you read the book section or chapter so that you can be a fully-engaged participant in that month's discussion.
Discussion on Public Safety
After the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, the subsequent uprising, and the re-imagining of public safety in our communities, we want to hear from you:
What is the role of police in our community?
What does public safety look like to you?
How can we build a future where we all feel safe?
Monday, August 24, 7 – 9 PM on Zoom
Join the Zoom meeting online with the link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5541355413 or call in to (312)626-6799 with Meeting ID: 55413 55413.

📝 If you can't make it to the meeting or you prefer to give written input, you can email us a comment with your input at sno@sheridanneighborhood.org with "Public Safety" as the subject. There will be a chance to submit written comments at the meeting as well.
📨 We hope to gather these comments anonymously into a document we can use to show our policy-makers what Sheridan residents want moving forward. If you do not want your comment to be included in that document, let us know in that email and we will leave it out.
#MaskUpSheridan
As of July 25th, 2020, per the Governor's Executive Order 20-81, people in Minnesota are required to wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces and indoor businesses, unless you are alone in the space. Additionally, workers are required to wear a face covering when working outdoors in situations where social distancing cannot be maintained.
Research has shown that use of face coverings can greatly reduce the risk of infection when combined with other prevention efforts such as social distancing and hand hygiene.
#MaskUpSheridan! Our community is counting on you 😷💕

Census 2020 Sheridan
As of May 26th, 68.6% of Sheridan Neighborhood residents have responded to the Census. Let’s make sure that 100% get counted!
The Census impacts how billions of dollars are distributed across Minnesota. It determines funding for public health, schools, housing, transit, and infrastructure (roads/bridges, water/sewer, gas/electric). An accurate count means better serving people where they live. Specifically, every person we don’t count is $28,000 our communities won’t receive over the next ten years.
Fill out the Census today at 2020census.gov! Find more information, in English, Somali, Spanish, and Hmong at mncounts.com.
Pierre Bottineau Library is a Questionnaire Assistance Center, but until the libraries re-open we encourage you to call the available Census hotlines listed below.

ANSWERS TO COMMON CENSUS QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS
What is on the Census anyway?
The Census only asks for basic information (e.g., age, sex, race, etc.) for all people living in the household. It does not ask for sensitive information like social security numbers. Read the Minnesota Census Fact sheet, Why We Ask to learn what is asked on the Census and why.
Why does it MATTER if I am counted?
A complete, fair and accurate Census count drives critical funding, services, and programming at the federal, state and local level. It also impacts how we are represented — an undercount could put Minnesotans at risk for losing our U.S. 8th Congressional District Seat.
Will my private data be protected?
What about PRIVACY?
Who can see my Census data, and how can it be used?
What about CITIZENSHIP?
There is no citizenship question on the census.
What if I have more than one residence -- where should I be counted in the Census?
Complete the Census at your “usual residence.” Whether you are a student or a “snowbird,” you should complete the Census using the address where you live most of the time. For more questions on this, see the US Census Bureau’s “Residence Criteria and Residence Situations for the 2020 Census of the United States” or email Ryan Redmer, Minnesota 2020 Census Associate, ryan.redmer@state.mn.us.
Do I still have the option to complete the Census another way if I prefer, or if I don't have internet access?
Yes. You can complete the questionnaire online (my2020census.gov), by mail, or over the phone: toll-free 844-468-2020. Learn more.
Census 2020 Yard Signs
One way to make sure that we all get counted is to spread the word. Get a yard sign for your yard today to tell your neighbors that you participated in the Census and that it is important that they do too!
Census Collaboration with Edison High School Students
NE Neighbors, watch this great video our youth made about the importance of the 2020 Census in many languages! Thanks to ETSN and MTN TV Studios for making this video even through these difficult times.
This was a collaboration between Edison High School (Minnesota), MTN TV Studios, Logan Park Neighborhood Association, and Sheridan Neighborhood Organization.
NE Storm Drain Challenge
NE Adopt-a-Drain Challenge
From May 1 to October 31, 2020
Here in NE, all of our storm drains go straight to the Mississippi River carrying pollutants and debris with it. It's important to keep our Mississippi clean, not only for the plants and animals that call it home, but also because that's where we in Minneapolis get our drinking water from, along with millions of our neighbors down river from us.
Join us in adopting a storm drain near your house. Adopting a storm drain just means that you'll keep an eye on and clean it out with a broom and rake when it gets clogged with trash, leaves, and sand. Kids love to help and you feel like you're really doing something concrete to help our Planet and protect our water.
It's a friendly competition to see which NE neighborhood can adopt the most storm drains by the end of October. Do your part to rep your neighborhood! By this fall, we'll be able to measure the difference our efforts have made in keeping pollutants out of our Mississippi River! Go to adopt-a-drain.org to sign up!
Did you know our storm drains lead directly to the Mississippi River without any filtration? Sheridan Neighborhood is joining the #NEStormDrainChallenge to make sure all our storm drains get cleaned to protect the river!
💧Step 1: Adopt as many storm drains as you would like in the Sheridan Neighborhood at adopt-a-drain.org
💧Step 2: Estimate type and pounds of debris collected in your drains and submit the data every time you clean them
💧Step 3: Promote the challenge with your Sheridan Neighbors using #NEStormDrainChallenge
Individuals will get yard signs and businesses will get window clings to show that they are helping keep the Mississippi River clean!
Competition categories:
1) highest number of new storm drains adopted
2) most pounds of waste collected during the Challenge
3) greatest increase in percentage of storm drains adopted
4) most creative name

Envision Community Proposal
Members from Envision Community Collaborative have joined us for SNO Board and Community Programming Committee meetings in Spring of 2020 to discuss their proposal for an Intentional Community Project in the Sheridan Neighborhood. They have proposed this project to be built on the 1720 Marshall St NE property owned by the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board (MPRB).
Envision Community Collaborative is proposing a live 2-year demonstration housing 15-30 people in microhomes around a common house living cooperatively as an intentional community. If you are interested in learning more about the details of Envision Community and the background behind our proposal, see the below key documents about Envision and this project:
Project brief: this is the best summary document of the project.
Operating Handbook: learn about intentional community and how Envision will operate.
Cluster renderings: see what a typical Envision site will look like. Because Envision has a modular design, we can expand and contract the number of units based on the size of the lot or reconfigure the cluster groupings to fit onto various lot shapes.
Zoning staff report: read the staff report describing the zoning code text amendment approved by the City Council that allows Envision Community in Minneapolis.
Introduction to Envision Community: read a detailed introduction to Envision Community.
Setting the price-point for housing: learn more about how we set the price point for Envision's housing and our sustainable financial model.
Media links: read the Star Tribune article by Chris Serres and the MPR article by Martin Moylan about Envision Community.
Sheridan Neighborhood Organization has discussed the importance of supporting those experiencing housing instability in Sheridan Neighborhood and the Greater NE area and recognizes Envision Community’s common goal. SNO is currently drafting a letter of support for this project. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please let us know at sno@sheridanneighborhood.org and we will be sure to incorporate your input in our work with Envision and the MPRB moving forward.
Volunteer & Business of the Year
We are so happy to announce the recipients of our Volunteer and Business of the Year Awards!! We officially announced them and virtually showed the recipients their plaques at our Annual Meeting and will drop them off social distancing style soon. 🥁Drumroll please.....
.
.
The Volunteer of the Year Award goes to Sandy Carlson-Kortebein who has put in so much of her organizational skills, time, and energy into Sheridan Neighborhood for years. She ran the Silent Auction at this year's SNO Ball and we could not have raised those funds for the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District and our programming without her. Thank you, Sandy!
The Business of the Year Award goes to @fletchersicecream, a business in Sheridan which prioritizes our local community! For the last few years, they haven't hesitated in donating ice cream for our summer Ice Cream SNOcials and we are so thankful for their generosity that supports community-building in Sheridan. Thank you, Fletcher's!
Welcome New Board Members!
SNO would like to welcome our four new Board Members! We are so excited to have you join us in serving your neighborhood: Kaylee Bond, Britta Dornfeld, Caleigh Souhan, and Sean Wall!
And welcome back to our existing board members who have been re-elected to serve another term: Seaen Kosmides, Carin Peterson, and Joy Smallfield!
