SNO Community Garden #1 was started in 2017 as the first community garden in Sheridan Neighborhood. It began as a joint project between Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, The Islamic Community Center of Minnesota/Masjid Al-Iman, and Dangerous Man Brewing Co. In 2024 Dangerous Man Brewing Co moved out of Sheridan and Sheridan Neighborhood Organization took over as the main administrator of SNO 1 in partnership with The Islamic Community Center of Minnesota/Masjid Al-Iman and California Street Farm.

The garden has 11 neighborhood plots and a kid's plot, some land is dedicated to planting and harvesting fresh organic produce for Masjid Al-Iman families. California Street Farm also donates a portion of their produce grown on the site to Masjid Al-Iman families.

SNO Community Garden #2 was started in 2019 to expand garden plot opportunities and a large donation garden for Every Meal. It began as a joint project between Sheridan Neighborhood Organization and Surly Gives A Damn. In 2024 Sheridan Neighborhood Organization took over as the main administrator of SNO 2 working with dedicated neighbors in Sheridan to continue the donation garden.

The garden has 18 neighborhood plots, including one wheelchair accessible raised bed, and a donation garden for Every Meal, an organization providing fresh food to children with food insecurity.

As a community garden our mission is:

- To create a positive community space inclusive of racial, cultural, and religious diversity.

- To connect with the earth and community by planting and harvesting organic food grown.

- To provide knowledge, resources, and healthy food for families and children.

- To fight child hunger in partnership with Every Meal (previously the Sheridan Story).

- To engage the neighborhood, community and children with nature, to learn and grow physically and mentally.

- To create and engage others in positive social and environmental impacts.

Volunteer

The donation gardens are maintained by an amazing group of volunteers that dedicate time every week to projects, up keep, and harvesting at the garden.

Interested in getting involved? Harvesting is typically on Mondays and we are always looking for volunteers to help weed and water both gardens. Over 60 volunteers help create, grow, maintain and harvest the gardens over the summer months.

Check out current volunteer opportunities for the gardens or fill out an interest form below.

Rent a Plot

SNO Community Garden #1 has very limited 10x10 plots available, with a current waitlist. SNO Community Garden #2 has a few 4x8 raised bed plots available at this time including one wheelchair accessible raised bed. When those are filled, further interest will go to a waitlist.

Please fill out the application and we will contact you about the gardens if a plot is available otherwise we will put you on the waitlist. The yearly plot rental fee is $45, this money will be used to pay for the water bill and other upkeep expenses.

Ice Cream SNOcial

In late summer each year, we host our annual Ice Cream SNOcial in the community gardens with treats donated by our wonderful local businesses! Fletcher’s Ice Cream has donated ice cream, SiP Coffeebar has donated drinks, and Ink Sweets has donated pastries. It’s a fun time to connect with neighbors and check out the bounty of Sheridan! Follow us on social media or sign up for our e-newsletter to get updates on future Ice Cream SNOcial event details.

Gardens Funding

Sheridan Neighborhood Organization funds the gardens, including tools, and other equipment. Our garden managers work hard to connect with local farmers, tree trimmers, and city programs to locally acquire compost, wood chips, seeds, straw, and other supplies.

Funds supporting these gardens are approved by the SNO Board based on community input. Each winter, the SNO board votes on the next season’s budget. View yearly recaps and proposed budgets below:
