Justice for Daunte Wright

We at Sheridan Neighborhood Organization are committed in solidarity with the family, friends, and community of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black father who was shot and killed by Brooklyn Center Police on Sunday, April 11th, as well as those holding space at 63rd Ave N and Kathrene Dr. in grief and anger. We condemn the systems of racism and oppression which continue to enable police violence on our Black communities. We are calling on you, our neighbors, to get engaged in the community, talk to your legislators, and help financially support those who have been targeted by the police. We need everyone to work together to end this systemic violence on Black lives and we commit to doing everything in our power to support, uplift, and protect our Black community members here in Sheridan.

Monday, April 26th at 7pm on Zoom

On March 22nd, the SNO Board voted to put out a 21 Day Notice of intent to move the remainder of our CPP Reserve funds into priorities including:

  • $82,000 from Reserve to Engagement Efforts

  • $11,613.49 from Reserve to Raingardens and Community Gardens

This totals $93,613.49 which is the entirety of our Reserve fund. View all of our CPP Funding here.

The SNO Board also voted to change the Microgrants priority language to expand eligibility requirements so that community members can apply for a microgrant (up to $500) for any project that benefits the neighborhood and community.

SNO intends to conduct a community vote on these changes. Please join our Annual Meeting to vote on Monday, April 26th at 7pm on Zoom.

Reasoning:

Funding for Neighborhood Organizations across the City of Minneapolis is changing this year from the Community Participation Program (CPP) to Neighborhoods 2020. This means that on July 1st, 2021, all of our uncontracted funds (including the Reserve fund) will be funneled into Neighborhoods 2020 funding. In order to maximize neighborhood use of the funds, the board has decided to move all of the CPP reserve funds into priorities.

Our Engagement Efforts priority includes all of our events, outreach, meetings, staffing, and general neighborhood engagement. The funds allocated to the Raingardens & Community Gardens priority would go directly to establishing and maintaining Raingardens in the neighborhood. Any unspent funds will still be available on an application basis in the Neighborhoods 2020 funding.

As always, feel free to contact us at sno@sheridanneighborhood.org with questions or comments.

The SNO Board votes annually to add funds to the Fix & Paint Program, a deferred loan program for exterior home repair projects. Submit comments by the February Board Meeting (Feb 22nd) or attend to share your ideas on how we can change the program to better serve our neighborhood and how much funding should be allocated towards it.

Typically, about $50,000 is allocated to this program, allowing for at least 10 loans of up to $5,000 for Sheridan homeowners. This year, we are planning to open up the program to renters who work with their landlords on the application.

Have you received a Fix & Paint loan in the past? We would love to have your story and pictures of your project, as well as any ideas you have on making the program better! Email sno@sheridanneighborhood.org.

NE T-shirt Fundraiser

NE Tshirt.png

We are fundraising to support our residents and neighbors struggling during the pandemic through Northeast T-shirt sales! These raised funds will only go towards costs that SNO is not able to use city funding for, such as rent, bills, food, and legal support.

These shirts were made by local printer DomCasual, see his work on instagram at @domcasual. All shirts are unisex sizing (M-XXL; we are out of size small) and will come with a free Northeast Calendar and SNO sticker! A great gift for the holidays.

**IMPORTANT: Please machine wash COLD and air-dry these shirts. Do NOT wash with heat or dry in a dryer. The red NE may fade or scratch if you do not follow these instructions. Thank you for your understanding in our work to support local entrepreneurs and artists!**

We are asking $20 per shirt, but you are welcome to make additional donations which will also go to the same fund.

Currently, we have two purchase options:

1)    Send a check to the SNO office: 1304 University Ave NE #301, Minneapolis, MN 55413

2)    Purchase through Paypal at https://paypal.me/SheridanNeighborhood (If you are able to click “send to friends and family” or uncheck “paying for goods or a service,” we will receive the full payment without a $1 fee/shirt)

In either case, include a note with the quantity of each size you would like (M-XXL; we are out of size small), your address for drop off (if you live in NE), and your contact info (in case we run out of your requested size and for pickup arrangement if you live outside of NE)

Example: I would like 1 M and 1 XL shirt, deliver to 1304 University Ave NE, email is sno@sheridanneighborhood.org.

If you do not include this note, we will not be able to deliver it to you! We will be sure to deliver your purchase or get in contact with you within one week of receiving it. Thank you for supporting your neighbors!

The history of the NE Flag

The idea for a NE Mpls flag was developed by local Northeast Bank president Walter Rassmussen in 1973. Walter's vision for a park-like parking lot next to his bank needed a community flag to celebrate neighborhood pride. The winner of a flag design contest was crafted by a ten-year-old Northeaster named Tony Di Giovanni. Read more here.

Nbhd Name Change Survey

We need your input on changing the name of Sheridan Neighborhood

Who is our Neighborhood named after?

Sheridan Neighborhood in NE Minneapolis is named after Philip Henry Sheridan, a Union General in the American Civil War and General of the Army fighting against Indigenous People all over North America and most notably in the Indian Wars of the Great Plains.

He was famous for his horrendous scorched-earth tactics, for leading the extermination of the buffalo, and forcibly relocating Indigenous Peoples from their territories to reservations. Sheridan is credited with saying, “The only good Indians I ever saw were dead” which was honed into the American expression "The only good Indian is a dead Indian" which was commonly used to fuel Native genocide for decades after. It it is not recorded that Sheridan ever stepped foot in Minnesota. Read more details on Sheridan’s legacy here.

How did this start? What other groups have changed their names to cut ties with Sheridan?

Sheridan School began the process of changing their name in the summer of 2020 after learning about Philip Sheridan’s racist and violent legacy. They are actively working on co-creating a name that better represents their students. You can learn more about their Change the Name Initiative here (English & Español).

The organization formerly known as The Sheridan Story changed their name to Every Meal at the beginning of October, 2020 to better support the children and families they serve, including those from Indigenous backgrounds. You can learn more about why they changed their name here.

Why the Board of the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization does not support honoring Sheridan’s legacy:

We believe in the power of a name as it honors the legacy of an individual and what they stood for. Our community has repeatedly shown that we do not stand racism, bigotry, and violence against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. We believe that our namesake must reflect both what we stand for and the community that we envision moving forward. Philip Sheridan’s legacy of Indigenous genocide is not that vision.

Quite simply, our mission says it best:

The mission of the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization (SNO) is to strengthen and celebrate the community by facilitating connections between the residents, businesses, and institutions of Sheridan. SNO is dedicated to preserving the neighbors’ strengths, identifying and helping to address the community’s changing needs, and bringing positive improvements to all.

Our strength lies in the people who make up our neighborhood, including Indigenous community members who’s ancestors may have been directly impacted by Philip Sheridan. With the goal of helping address our community’s changing needs, we are asking for your input.

Name Change Survey: We need your input!

1.png

Sheridan Neighborhood Organization is seeking community input on changing the name of the neighborhood, beginning with an online survey which will be available through December 31st, 2020. A paper survey will be made available at Eat My Words Bookstore.

We are no longer taking responses for this name change survey.

Want to get more involved? Join the Neighborhood Name Change Committee

2.png

SNO is forming a Neighborhood Name Change Committee which will begin meeting in February of 2021 and will help guide the name change process towards a final decision on whether to change the name of the neighborhood, and if so, what the final name will be.

Tasks may include attending virtual meetings, reviewing final survey results, rounding down alternative name suggestions, conducting a follow-up survey, and hosting public meetings.

Please fill out this interest form by January 31st, 2021:

What is the process for changing a neighborhood name?

  1. Community Engagement
Online surveys, community discussions, and gathering input from those who live, work, and own in Sheridan Neighborhood. This could also include gathering name suggestions, narrowing them down, and doing a community vote on the final name.

  2. Board Vote
The neighborhood board should take all community input into account as they vote whether or not to change the name and what to change it to.

  3. City Council Vote
The neighborhood board will submit all community input, their vote. and the suggested name to the City Council who will vote on whether to accept or deny the name change.

This process has been done recently in the case of West Maka Ska (previously West Calhoun), ECCO (previously East Calhoun), and other neighborhoods.

Help us flyer for Adopt-a-Drain.png

It’s Fall Leaf Cleanup Week!

With the weather warming up it’s perfect timing to clean up all the leaves that have been accumulating before the next round of snow hits!

Storm drains feed directly into our local lakes and rivers, unfiltered, so it’s important to keep them clear for cleaner and healthier waterways. Fall is an especially important time to keep the leaves that are collecting on our streets and sidewalks out of our storm drains. While they might be “natural” debris they become pollution when large quantities hit the water and break down becoming food for algae.

Make sure you’re ready for the week with this checklist of things to do.

1. Adopt an available storm drain near you at http://adopt-a-drain.org if you haven’t already (or feel free to adopt more if you already have an adopted drain)

2. Gather the tools you'll need. These might include: gloves, rake, trash grabber, dustpan, safety vest, bins for separating waste, yard and/or trash bag

3. Collect and separate trash and recycling from the area around your adopted drain

4. Rake or sweep up leaves, sediment and sticks and place in compost or yard waste bag

5. Estimate and report the debris you collect from 10/26/2020-11/1/2020 and you’ll be entered to win a tote bag

6. (Optional, but greatly appreciated!) Take a before and after photo of your efforts and share it on your Facebook or Instagram and tag us!
